20th May 2024 Windsurfing: The Dip-Felixstowe Wind Direction: NE Wind Stength: 15/20 Surf / Sea State: smooth in big out Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny and warm Max Speed: 23.93 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 30.25 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Monday 20th May – Windsurf **** The Dip at Felixstowe – sunny and warm. Fin – 23.93 knot max , 22.41 knot ave (year PB), 12.71 knot hour, 19.18 knot mile, 48.65 km., 13.04 knot alpha. F2 282 Ride with Tushingham Storm 6.5m and 36 fin. The good weather continues with another sunny warm day with more breeze forecast so I was hoping for another foil today with some alterations on my set-up hoping to improve my upwind but for some reason I headed down to Felixstowe Ferry to take some weather pics, I arrived at The Ferry around 8.30 and got some lovely pics, mainly of the beautiful valarien set against the blue sky. Home for breakfast and as I had to wait for the wind to build and the tide to drop I was in no hurry so had plenty of time to do my exercises:) With a few sailors heading down to The Dip and with limited parking I decided to pack lunch and Mag came with me to eat with a sea view! The conditions were looking very good as the tide dropped and the water fairly smooth, especially nearer the beach and was surprised to get 20 knots on the wind gauge which was enough to fin a very rare thing these days, I have only been on the fin board once this year, in fact during the afternoon there were 3 out on the fin, 4 on the wing, 2 foilers and a couple of kiters late on, so all sports were well catered for on a Monday afternoon:) The other fin sailors rigged 5.6 and 7 so I went with my 6.5 which is like a big wave sail and is not particularly quick, well that’s my excuse but that’s the biggest sail I fin with these days! I was first on the water around two and I had to sail a couple of hundred metres out to find the wind and then I had a good couple of hours sailing long 2.50 miles out, but Peter Edmunds out on 7m was going even further! For me it could have been a fraction windier so no great speeds for me today especially as the sea got pretty big out to sea.There was a nice area of fairly flat water in front of kite beach but you had to be careful as there was a shingle bank. In the end I came ashore absolutely knackered and had a well deserved snack. I then had a few more runs with the tide turned in made the water smoother but the wind was a little patchy so I decided to call it a day, I had sailed a little over 30 miles and nearly 25 yesterday! So at this point it had been a good weekend so I packed up and headed for home, it was only when I had got a mile down the road I realised I had left my gps on the top of my trailer, I quickly stopped but it had gone:( Turned around as quickly as possible, not easy in Felixstowe at the moment as there is road closures everywhere! I returned to The Dip and walked slowly back miles but could not see it anywhere, to say I was fed-up is an under statement with poor old Mag taking the brunt of my bad mood, I even went to bed in a huff! Then on Tuesday morning I checked my spare gps in a rug of water and discovered it floated so headed back down to The Dip to check the many road drains which proved empty but then I got lucky and found in In the grass verge, I was so happy, I then managed to get some pics to send to the weather, a gloomy, close day with the sea mirror flat but at least the rain did not arrive until lunch time!
