16th August 2015 Kayaking - Surf Skiing: Levington Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: cloudy Max Speed: 6.59 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 5.59 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Top weekend – you don’t have to have any wind to have a good time!!! :) After yesterdays nice bike ride, lovely meal with Peter,Gill and Leisel + England Rugby team and Ipswich FC both winning !!! and with light airs and a good tide today - we decided to get the canoe out for the second week running:) I pack a picnic and we drive over to Levington Marina about 2hours before high water. It was a bit spooky with silky calm water and some menacing stormy skies! We set off up the River Orwell towards Ipswich and into Levington Creek scaring off several birds in the process! Then on the way out of the creek a huge seal pops up to say hello!!! :) He was lifting his head high and really watching us. We spent ten minutes watching each other – just magic! We then crossed the River as we slowly paddle to Pin Mill through loads of yachts saying a cheery hello to many of the sailors. We can see the Orwell Bridge now and loads of dinghies racing in the large bay opposite Woolverstone. Pin Mill is a pretty little hamlet right on the river with a top pub, chocolate box cottages and moorings for house boats and sailing barges. The jetty is full of action with people heading out onto the water in a variety of craft; we carry on looking for a spot for our picnic which is not easy with the tide so high and not a lot of bank! We scare off several egrets roosting in a tree and find a nice spot just down from Pin Mill where we pull the canoe ashore and have a lovely hour having our lunch reading and watching the world go by! It’s nearly 3 miles here and we were not looking forward to the long paddle back but the tide had turned which helped and we whizzed back past the house boats to the creeks where there were hundreds of birds, mainly Oyster catchers which took to the air as we passed :) As we crossed the river back to the marina an old sailing barge was heading back to Pin Mill. Instead of landing on the beach we launched from I decided to take Mag into the marina to land, we steered up to the pontoon which is when our problems started, the platform was a couple of feet above us and getting out was not easy!!! I managed to get out of the canoe ok but poor old Mag had all sorts of problems! As she tried to stand up in the canoe it disappeared under the pontoon which left her hanging by her finger tips with her backside in the water and her feet still in the canoe!!! At this point I was really torn – should I try and help Mag from a soaking or should I get the camera and record the moment!!! After asking Mag to let go which she didn’t think a good idea I managed to pull the canoe back under her saving her a complete soaking but was a bit disappointed I didn’t record the moment – it would have made a great shot!!! And we did laugh :) So a top 4 hours out even if the weather cloudy and grey! Photo Gallery here |
