Thursday 28th December – relax, travel and walk **** sunny.

Cold night in the van, OK under the fleecy quilts but had to sleep in my Buff to keep my head warm! Woke to another clear blue day but everything was covered in a think frost, just stunning:) Mag went into the Perry’s Cottage for breakfast and ended up giving Arlo his breakfast while I read a while, then packed the bed away as we are leaving today and then had 20 minutes taking pictures, the narrow lane was deadly as covered in ice! After breakfast I went with Rob and Martin to pick up his car from the Farm House of Hannah’s Uncle and Aunt, scene of yesterday’s family get together. The front wheel was making a grinding noise so we had to take a jack and spanners because as with lots of new years it doesn’t come with a spare wheel:( You wouldn’t believe how remote the cottage was miles down a narrow bumpy track with long brambles brushing the car. The farm yard and cottage were lovely with a dog, cats and loads of chickens:) The car was soon sorted, a stone in the disc brake so it was back to Perry’s to head off but we were kindly invited for lunch, scrambled eggs with eggs collected that morning delicious too, made by Rob and Arlo even had some. It was then time to say goodbye and head for the hill, we thanked Maize and Martin for their hospitality, Mag put Arlo for a sleep as Rob and Hannah are heading home to and we left. I had set my GPS so I could map the route we walked yesterday and surprised everyone when we returned to the cottage after nearly hitting a Buzzard and peasant in the lane! Rob said goodbye again and with the sat-nav set we headed for Portland with the plan to make a small detour at West Bay better known to you as Broadchurch where the famous TV series was filmed. It’s a windy route and took an hour to get there and even though we arrived fairly late at 3 it was pretty busy. There are loads of reasonable pay and display car park around the little harbour but sadly although free to park overnight sleeping was not allowed :( We set of around the harbour past a large old terrace block, lobster pots and fishing boats before catching our first glimpse of the famous Jurassic cliffs rising steeply at the end of the town, just amazing especially with the sun approaching sunset making the light stunning :) There were loads of people of the beach, some with dogs or kids, some just sitting on the beach watching the sun disappear while other scrambled up the very steep, muddy path to the cliff top! We decided to head to the top and walked along by the golf course as the sun disappeared with a pair of Stone Chats following us along flying from post to post! The beach was far below and it was wise not to venture too close to the edge as it was prone to collapse! We went down some steeps to try to return on the beach but it didn’t go to the beach and with the tide high it was probably just as well! Back at the van we had a quick drive round to try and find somewhere to park but had no luck and as it was getting late we didn’t want to go too far so headed out on the coast road. Just two miles down the road at Burtan Bradstock we from a lane leading to the cliffs and parked by the entrance to a National Trust walk. There is a large restaurant at the end of the lane but I think it will be very quiet and tomorrow if the weather is OK, rain is forecast we could explore the cliffs here before checking out Portland to see if windy enough to sail before heading home!

Friday 29th December – travel home :( strong winds and heavy rain!!

After should a lovely time away it all went wrong:( first poor little Arlo had an allergic reaction to egg and had to visit the doctor. Then early this morning the wind became so strong on our clifftop parking spot we had to drive off in the dark to find some shelter and got soaked getting the steps from under the van as it was tipping it down. We found a gateway just through Burtan and the lanes were like rivers! With the weather so bad we decided to drive straight home and the toads were busy:( Arlo now much better and we had a had a wonderful break:)
