Friday 20th April - walk ***** East Lane to Shingle Street – sunny, still
and hot.
Another top night at Bawdsey, woke to check the sunrise but not good this
side of the river Deben as shaded by cliffs so went back to sleep. Weather
as yesterday so we both managed to do our exercises on the small beach as
the fishing boats prepared and waited for the tide to turn to set off. Mag
even had a phone call from our friends the Hurrells who said they could see
us from across the river :) They are staying in Felixstowe for a few days
and biked down to the ferry, Neil wanted to come over but there is no way
you will get Linda in a boat! Not sure what to do today as we had done the
Bawdsey walk but it was too nice a day to go home so we decided to quickly
pack the van up and drive the short distance down the road to the carpark
at East Lane. Not such a great view here but we could do the nice walk to
Shingle Street. Again, rucksack packed we headed off just before one past
the farmers reservoirs with their nesting swans towards the fully restored
Martello tower which has featured in magazines and on TV. Past another
field of glorious yellow rape where a photographer with a serious lens was
watching for birds, then turned right down to the beach which is quite
something, a 2/3-mile curve of steep single with only the odd sea fisherman
on. We sat on the single bank for a sandwich but it was very hot with
little breeze coming from the offshore winds. We tried reading our books
but were soon covered in little black bugs so moved closer to the water
where it was bug free. We sat/layed with our feet in the water but that is
still very cold! We can’t believe we saw a young lady went for a swim
yesterday near the Martello tower! Continued along the beach picking up the
odd piece of coal and some plastic rubbish. We finally made it to Shingle
Street, passing the small hamlet and walking as far as the small lagoon
used by kitesurfers. A bit of a sea breeze had picked up from the NE
making it cool off and we didn’t have a sweatshirt! We stooped for half a
banana each and continued on, back to the coastguard cottages leading to
the path. Because of the cool breeze we walked below the sea wall and got
back to the van after 3 hours 40 mins away, covering 4.77 miles.
Unfortunately, a couple of campervans had parked nearby:( but they soon
left while we had a welcome cuppa. After tea as the sun was setting I
walked up to the Martello tower to get some pics, the tide was very low but
it was also very chilly so got back to the van frozen, we even had the
diesel heater on for a while, we love this van:) Here all on our own:)
