After a mare day Sunday attempting to hold down the 135 Goya Bolt in rough seas at the Manor, I had to make the effort for the Mersea trip, with incoming tide on a westerly 20kt forecast.
All the Felixstowe crew out so delayed sail selection. Most went with 7m so pulled out the 7.8 Goya Mark to cover my body weight. Most sailors headed high so tried to join them upwind. With hind sight should have just stayed on the line across to Bradwell as the wind wasn't that great upwind, nor was the water flatter. The middle was choppy but the North shoxs handles short chop brilliant and was in damp mode till you were out of it. Flat water was either side of the middle so gybing was nice for a change. Stopped a few times to tweak footstraps, sail, mast foot position and boom height as felt the 26kts I was getting was poor on the day. The other guys were tearing up and down and Craig nearly caught me dozing, as I was cruising. Had to step on it to show him my rear end. Met up with Pete Ed as I smashed into the shallow water gybing too close to shore. We decided on a burn up to the boardwalk, and the red 120 Severne Fox is one fast slalom board! He was faster upwind when he suddenly catapulted, when I was well happy and I stayed ahead! But alas I thought he had water started and turned back, but his UJ broke and he had to be rescued by the Yatch club race boat after 30 mins in the water. He said he was waving on a bright red board and I didn't see him! I went back and got him my spare mast foot, trekking back to the monkey steps where they left him. He had a great day apart from holing his new board. Had to leave after a couple or so hours for family stuff. Hit a couple of underwater groins and grounded out Bradwell side so am now well battered and bruised. Love Mersea.
