Sunday 12 May – Bike ***** Two rivers – Bawdsey Quay/East Lane/Shingle Street and Ramsholt:)

We hope to get away in our little VW campervan at least once every month and finally after a spell of poor weather things have improved. After watching a round of the British Slalom Championship at Felixstowe yesterday, not windy enough for slalom but some interesting foil racing, we pack the van including the bikes and head to our favourite local spot, Bawdsey Quay:) The small layby is only three miles from our house as the crow flies, but 25 miles around the River Deben and I always get a little nervous as we turn the last bend hoping our place is free? There was another VW parked there but they moved away after they had cooked their breakfast so we were soon in prime position with stunning views over the Deben a few metres away and one of the best places in Suffolk for a sunset:) After our breakfast, porridge and fruit and with a picnic packed I untie the bikes and we set off at 11.45 in bright warm sunshine. This is the first time we have taken the bikes here as we usually walk along the beach. We headed back along the lane to Bawdsey village and once again it was beautiful with the white blossom, hawthorn this time, set against the vibrant yellow of the rape:) Turning right we reach East Lane and the sea and are met by an easterly breeze strong enough to windsurf but not so great for biking into! You follow the sea wall past a couple of Martello towers to Shingle Street stopping off by the River Alde to admire the view before heading inland and it soon warms up away from the cool onshore breeze:) We travel along quiet country lanes stopping at Hollesley Church with a graveyard full of buttercups. We are getting hungry now so we look for a picnic spot, at Alderton we continue on to Ramsholt which was a bit further than we expected. On reaching the River Deben at Ramsholt we couldn’t believe the sign that greeted us ‘Private Beach picnics not allowed’ has the world gone crazy, sad state of affairs when you are not allowed to picnic on the beach :( We parked up at the end of the beach for our salad before continuing along the seawall in hope of getting to Ramsholt church which is on the hill behind. After half a mile we realised we couldn’t get to it this way so return to the pub, then go through the marsh and up to the very impressive 7 th century church with its round tower once used as a lookout. Amazingly the church was open so we had a look around and spy a nice parking spot under some pine trees with great river views and will try this for an overnight stop sometime! All that was left now was the three mile ride back to the van for a welcome cuppa enjoying the river view, sometimes the tide coming in sometimes going out, amazing really:) Being a sunny Sunday there were groups of teenagers having barbeques with six packs of lager, not a recipe for a relaxing evening! In the end we were pleasantly surprised as they had fun on the beach up from us even collecting twigs for a fire and surprising us, they cleared everything up, we were impressed:) Then as usual for here we were treated to yet another amazing sunset, it never fails to deliver here :)
