17th September 2019 Hiking - Walking: Walkers Hill and NT – Winkworth Arboretum Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered: Monday 17th September – walks ***** Walkers Hill and NT – Winkworth Arboretum - sunny. Had a good night at Walkers Hill car park in the middle of the lovely rolling countryside of Wiltshire all alone in the middle of nowhere:) This was our last day before heading back to look after Grandson Arlo and we certainly made the most of it especially as we were treated to another sunny day. Our first aim after breakfast was to set off up the grassy slopes at 10 o clock to walk up to the top of the lovely named Milk Hill at 294m which offers stunning views down to the Vale of Pewsey. We had to pass some fine cattle with some impressive horns which Mag gave a wide berth! There were some earth mounds below the hill which looked like another hill fort. We then went in search of yet another white horse carved into the chalk, there are loads of them around here. This one is not particularly well known and was made by a local farmer in the 18th Century. Mag followed a sheep path to the right and we soon found it and impressive it was too! We then headed a different route back to the van making it a circular route and as we had plenty of time, we set off up to the top of Knap Hill where an adventurous mountain biker had just climbed! Now there is a hill fort here even if not very pronounced but great views none the less:) With the van packed we headed to Surrey and making good time we ended up at National Trusts Winkworth Arboretum by 2.30. After a cuppa we went for nice walk around the trees, we have had a real NT feast during this break and have got our membership fees down to minus £250 and will defiantly continue our membership next year as they do a wonderful job in looking after so much that is great in English Heritage:) You meander down the hill with the feel of Autumn approaching to a large lake with a boat house and back up to the van, a lovely way to spend an hour or two. It was only a short drive to Sayers Croft and another couple of great days with the lovely Arlo – even making another picnic at the lovely National Trust Nymans after Mag took him to his swimming lesson:) So, what a top break, 17 nights away in our lovely little campervan enjoying the best the UK has to offer. I had two top windsurfing sessions covering 293 km. we also biked nearly 60 miles visiting the delightful Bath plus several great walks and all for the cost of a tank of diesel:) Photo Gallery Here NT – Winkworth Arboretum W alkers Hill |
