20th May 2017 Windsurfing: Felixstowe Dip Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: F3/4 Surf / Sea State: flat / swell Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: sunny Max Speed: 26.70 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 9.3 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Best sea sail of the year even though I left it too late. Arrived 1pm when really should have gone down at 10, rig and wait. The sea was perfect with several sailors arriving and Swainey tanking it on 8.2 way out to sea. Said I wouldn't rig a cam sail at the dip, but with the sea so nice with low tide rigged a RRD 7.8 Firewing which is a superb triple cam sail and linked it to my JP 146L. I am using a North 4.60 mast in the RRD sail which RRD says is a 30% performance drop! The sail sets fine and rotates well so I think that's marketing hype. The first run was superb, straight off the beach hammered out to sea via the river mouth, over the river swell to clean swell the other side. The sail was fully powered up but really comfortable. Definitely the cam sails perform better in overpowered conditions compared to my same size rotational North E type. The wing was rigged and thankfully I didn't drop the sail on the outer gybes. Planed hard most times but the fastest runs were going out to sea. Had a really long mile blast with Andy Mex out to sea, with neither of us backing off! Result was evens Andy on 8.0 rotational. That produced fastest run by me 26.70kts today and if RRD was to be believed - the North mast gives a 30% drop in performance! Yep don't think so! alas the wind started to ease after an hour or so. Had a few lame runs then tried to sit it out. Most were just about planning and the light weights seem to be OK. Tried another run but the wind was too light. Thought about my 8.6 Gaastra, but in the end with a few packing up, decided to quit whilst ahead. Ironically after changing, the wind freshened around 4 o'clock with Squiz and the formula heads going well. Brilliant day and well please with tanking cam sails on open sea again all be it only done 9.6nm. Real shame the wind didn't stay up, but had an extra hour at the spa and had the steam room to myself. Most had a good day except Swainey snapped a boom and Mark had a swim after losing his fin. |
