9th July 2017 Windsurfing: Felixstowe Dip Wind Direction: East Wind Stength: 12-14kts Surf / Sea State: flat / swell Air Temperature: Hot Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny hot Max Speed: 12.3 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 9.3 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Another Mediterranean day at Felixstowe dip, hot sunny weather with an Easterly breeze. Arrived 1.30pm with Colsey with Mark, Graham and Neil rigging big kit. The wind freshened prob 15kts from 10kts - so it was game on for the 8.6 Gaastra Savage link to new board Patrik 145 freeride. Again as I was rigging, the wind went light again and so it was throughout the day. Neil was planning well on his mini formula, Mark flying on his Isonic, Colsey, Nick and Graham on big formula kit were also flying but alas I was just a couple of knots off planning. The wind stayed 12-14 kts according to HHA so prob 10kts at mast level. I had a couple of just planning runs but unless I pumped off waves, it wasn’t happening at 100kg body weight. Neil was buzzing me never off the plane with his small Starboard free formula. Nick and Colsey went to Languard at the docks flat out and Mark made to the pier so they all had a 5 star day except me. Frustratingly as I packed up at 5.30 the sea breeze came up to the magic 15kts and I would have been flying, bugger!! Couldn’t be bothered to get the wetsuit on and re-rig. Think I am going to try and pick up a mini formula board for the very light sea breeze, as Neil had a great day on his freebie big board. Mark has decided to get a formula board also for those days. I didn’t get on with the big 1 metre Formula kit but maybe the smaller ones with 58 fins could do it. The Patrik 145L needs a couple of knots more than the 146L JP pro Excite ride I had despite being a little corkier which surprised me. Prob would have planed with the JP, which is a pisser. Hope it’s fast in a blow to compensate for being a dog in light winds. Knackered in/out harness all day but a great sunny day made up for it. Colsey and Nick say they are flogging their freeride /Slalom gear and stick to Formula (plus a wave board) and if the Dip is too rough - sail at Bradfield which is always flat, and they can get back to shore even in offshore winds. Slalom kit just don’t get used enough planning, I tend to agree. I have had 3 sails now at 10kts literally just off the plane which is frustrating for the sake of not have a mini-formula. |
