9th November 2017 Hiking - Walking: Riverside Walk, Box Hill Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: rainy start but improved later Max Speed: Distance Covered: 5 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Monday 6th November – travel then walk **** sunny We travelled down to Surrey to see son Robert and Hannah plus the lovely Arlo. We made such good time we headed up into the beautiful Surrey Hills in stunning Autumn colours. We made a sandwich and walked to the National Trust Leith Hill Tower, a folly with amazing views to the South Downs:) The café at the tower was doing a roaring trade in the bright sunshine but we found a quiet seat for our picnic while watching plane after plane take off from Gatwick! We then had a top afternoon looking after Arlo while Hannah visited her school. Tuesday 7th November – relax then walk **** cloudy with misty rain Chilly night in Sayers Croft car park but we had two quits, I even had my hat and socks on! Relaxing morning then Rob drives us up into the hills and with Arlo in his sling we walk to an amazing wooden igloo – ‘a work by Giles Miller created ‘Perspectives’, a shelter nestled within the woods with a clear view towards the South Downs offering a space for focused contemplation’. It is a beautiful building made up of hundreds of small pieces of wood, sadly several have been broken by mindless oafs:( It was a little muddy under foot but it had rained all the previous night! Wednesday 8th November We had a good night in the van and after breakfast travelled into Cranleigh with Rob and Hannah. Hannah went to baby yoga with Arlo and Rob went to the Gym. We explored Cranleigh again and found an amazing shop called Mans which has a tiny old fashioned frontage and then goes miles back with a stock of furniture and posh ‘stuff’. On the top floor there is a toy shop and Mag was instantly attracted to a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle of a toy shop laid out on a table with two comfy chairs inviting customers to have a go. We couldn’t resist and must have spent 45 minutes piecing the edge pieces and some middle together!!! We carried on through the village, once we had dragged ourselves away, and met up with Rob Hannah and Arlo at Notcutts to look at the Christmas grotto. Home for lunch and a walk in the beautifully autumnal Sayers Croft woods with Rob and Arlo. Thursday 9th November – walk ***** then travel home – rainy start but improved With Rob back at work today we have a couple of hours with Arlo then head off home. With the rain cleared away we stop at the National Trust Stepping Stone carpark at the bottom of Box Hill but it is £4 so we drive a short way up the Zig Zag road to a small free carpark:) We then set off on a walk up some steep steps past the ‘Belted Galloway Cows’ to the visitor centre at the top of the hill passing several school groups enjoying the hill with loads of cyclists making the climb, made famous as the route for the Olympic Road race course! I read the noticeboard showing several walking routes and decided to try the Riverside Route, a three mile walk along the River Mole which we haven’t done before. Starting at the Salomons Memorial Viewpoint again with amazing views we head down the hill to the left ending up at the Mole. This is a nice flowing river with loads of fishing swims for the Dorking Angling club and I even got a quick glimpse of a Kingfisher whizzing past. The path wasn’t too muddy as we passed under the railway viaduct, a water mill then onto the fantastic stepping stones, always a top spot for taking pics:) The oafs had been here before us and left yet more litter, what is wrong with people! Mag picks it up and we continue past the hotel by the roundabout and up the hill to the van for a well-deserved sandwich. Then we had to drive home which wasn’t too bad a trip. So a lovely few days away as always - great to spend time with the gorgeous Arlo making plans for Christmas and the New Year too:) Fingers crossed it might be windy enough for a windsurf tomorrow and hopefully not too cold!
