Max Speed: Distance Covered: Monday 5th February – Walks ***** travel – cloudy with a little sun later and cold. A very quiet night in our spot near the plage at St. Jorioz and when we woke the height barriered carpark opposite had a 20-strong elderly keep fit class in full swing:) Relaxing start reading then after breakfast we walked the short distance down to Lac Annecy along a stream and although cloudy it was very still and the Lac looked its usual stunning self-surrounded by mountains with a host of snow covered trees. We passed the closed swimming plage with its high diving board turned right and walked to the port, past yet more jetties, another ferry pick up with a lovely wooden shelter, loads of well-trimmed plane trees, this Lac is a photographers dream:) There were a few boats out fishing but we are yet to see any sign of a fish plus the usual coots, swans, goosanders and our first heron on this lac but best of all we saw two nut hatches whizzing up some trees feeding on bugs. Back at the van we decided to head to the Lidl near Sevier to buy a cauliflower to use the vast amount of raclette cheese left over from the apartment as it is stinking out our fridge! Shopping quickly done we found a deserted alpine D road up into the mountains and to say this was stunning is not doing it justice! We soon reached the snow line, through pretty hamlets with little chapels. Saw several cats out hunting in the snowy meadows with snow covered trees and high peaks all around, just beautiful. We joined the yellow road at Leschaux where the road comes down from Semnoz a small ski resort we have been to before. The Pont du Diable is marked on our map and when we saw the sign to it and only 300m to walk we decided this was a good place to stop for lunch. The sun was now out making it even nicer when we walked the short distance to the small arch bridge, probably Roman over a very deep but extremely narrow gorge where the crazy people go canyoning, rather them than me! We followed the mountain stream up a few hundred metres taking pics along the way. What a great little detour and it was only 16 kilometres to Margeriaz 1400 another one of our favourites for skiing and snowshoeing:)After winding our way up the road with huge piles of snow on each side we arrived to find the carpark nearly empty and not an English car in sight:) We found a nice spot to park, had a cuppa and cake, had some fun feeding about 20 Alpine Chuffs bread out of the van before walking over to check things out, the pistes look fantastic even this late in the afternoon so will ski tomorrow if the weather is good. We walked a little way along the snowshoe path in the woods before returning to the van. As we are quite high up let’s hope its not too cold tonight, our van water is already frozen!
