6th February 2018 Skiing: Margeriaz 1400 Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny but clouding over late. Max Speed: 40.12 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 43 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Tuesday 6th February – ski ***** + Margeriaz 1400 – sunny but clouding over late. 5 hours 45 mins out, 40.12 knot max speed, 43 miles. Good night in the van in the carpark at Margeriaz 1400, the highest we have stopped so far, this trip and nowhere near as cold as expected overnight:) Woke to clear blue skies with cloud in the valleys so skiing was definitely on, my 6th session so far and now more than last year already! We were not in too much of a hurry as the little resort is so quiet and we wanted the pistes to soften up a little, nothing worse than icy slopes although not that much of a problem here as it only goes up to 1845m. After breakfast with picnic packed, gps set we left the van at 10.20 walking the short distance to pay for our passes. We were going to get four hours which is plenty for us old timers but the nice ticket lady said because it is off season we could have a day for the price of 4 hours, we always seem to get a deal here and it cost us 26 Euro’s each including insurance and a plastic ticket, shame we didn’t bring the ones from home it would have saved us loads of Euro’s but completely forgot them! Having skied/snowshoed at this lovely little resort before we know just how brilliant it is, long very well pisted blue and red runs that let you just whizz from top to bottom on runs over a mile long, you can go flat out straight down or turn to your heart’s content, I have never seen Mag go so fast and best of all you hardly see another skier:):):) The views all around are just stunning with high snow covered peaks including Mont Blanc with misty cloud in the valleys below just enhancing the splendour, we love the mountains so much! The only downside here is there is only one chair up with two difficult buttons on the right and three easier ones on the left but it just adds to the excitement as you near the top and the buttons turns a corner and becomes 50% !!!! Heading up the Le Roc De Balme chair - we lost count of the number of times we used this today - you have the choice of blue runs down, after stopping to take some pics I get the little camera out and video the 5-minute descent and what fun we had. We do this loads more times as these are the perfect pistes and then we head to the right past the warning signs saying how difficult the drag lifts are! We try the L’Agneau button first doing both the reds down getting my fastest speeds here, you can fly. Its then over to the Les Biolles button which really makes you ache as it gets steeper and steeper but it offers the best view in the resort and the only black here. Mag did the first black which then joins the red while I turned left and after a short walk uphill was able to join the Le Lynx, also black, which to be honest is more like a red but the exit is nice through the Le Foret blue. Getting hungry now we search for a picnic spot. Up at the top of the chairlift there is a picnic table but lucky for us that was full so we headed along the walking path along the steep ridge and found the perfect rocky spot on the edge with brilliant views and shared our picnic with several Alpine Choughs:) Mag took the opportunity to ring our good friend Mary back in Felixstowe for a chat and catch up from the top of a mountain!! Refreshed and with it sadly clouding up we spent an hour or so on the easier blue runs to the left, we did the border cross piste and even did a little offpiste, there is an huge area of great offpiste here which was quite popular today but the snow was not good enough - you need a foot of fresh to make it worth doing! Getting knackered now we decide to call it a day but not before gong up the difficult button twice, doing both the reds and for good measure we took the chair up to do the lovely blue one last time. It was then back to the van to pack the skis away and have a well-deserved cuppa and cake. The only downside was a another camper ( a big white elephant) had parked close to us blocking our view and the lady inside was playing the radio really loud but my glaring at her seemed to work because when her husband returned from some mountain walking they left:) We read and dozed and now have the resort nearly to ourselves. After quick and easy M & S tinned mince beef for tea (thanks Mary absolutely delicious) Mag needed the loo and decided to go over to the toilet block. She got the torch out stepped out of the van and was greeted by rustling followed by loud barking, I have never seen anyone move so fast back into the van!!! I then opened the door and a soft old dog was drinking our washing up water so Mag felt safe to go! So easily a 5 star + day Margeriaz is definitely in our top five resorts everyone should make the effort to give it a try – smaller is definitely better:) Photo Gallery Here |
