3rd March 2020 Hiking - Walking: Lac Annecy – St Jorioz and Annecy Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered: Tuesday 3rd March – walks ***** Lac Annecy – St Jorioz and Annecy – sunny:) After yesterday’s complete washout combined with the previous afternoon and both nights totalling 42 hours stuck in the van and going a little stir crazy - it was a great relief to wake up to a sunny morning at our overnight spot on a side road near Lac Annecy in St Jorioz. With it forecast to cloud over this afternoon we were keen not to waste the lovely sun and light airs, Mag did her stand-up exercises by the Lac and had a quick walk. Then after breakfast we walked the short distance to the Lac which was just stunning, still water with fantastic reflections of the snowy mountains with the trees covered in yesterday’s fresh snow and you could clearly see where the snow had turned to rain! This must be one of the best unspoilt sections of the Lac to walk with a nice promenade turning into a more natural path past reeds to a small yacht club with small birds flitting about, coots and grebes diving for food plus widgeons and swans. There were marinas full of small yachts and fishing boats which are always good for a picture. There is also an old wooden pier where the ferry stops and a closed plage with a large diving board for use when it is warmer! It was nice to see families on bikes, or people just walking plus the more serious joggers making full use of the lovely day:) At the end of the walk you cross a fast-flowing stream entering the Lac. The paths have large puddles and the green is sodden after yesterday’s deluge, the Lac was pretty high too and had been over onto the path in places. We were lucky to get a close-up view of a Jay feeding in the grass when it let us get very close:) We drove closer to Annecy town where we parked for free in a car park, we have actually stayed the night in on a previous visit. You then walk along the Lac to the river which runs through the heart of the old town past the large tourist boats and over the road bridge to the Lac side promenade. It was at this point we wished we had our Grandson Arlo with us because this is balance bike heaven and he has just got the hang of the one we got for his first Christmas, it would have been amazing fun chasing after him here, exhausting too! We had to make the most of watching the French kids on their little bikes or the roller bladders, joggers and loads of youngsters out having fun by the Lac as the kids are still on half term holidays. We walk around the cut where all the small fishing boats moor, to the roundabout where we get a nice French lad to take our picture. As we were near the town, we go in search of a camera shop to replace my lens cap I lost while snow shoeing the other day! That was easier said than done so we looked on Mags mobile and found 3 – one turned out to be a photographic art shop, the second a book shop and eventually a camera shop at the third attempt – they were all close together and very near to where we started the search so it was no hardship. However, it was closed for lunch so we bought cheese and ham ciabattas nicely warmed and almond croissants which we took to the Lac to eat. We found a seat actually on the water on a rickety jetty and were soon surrounded by birds wanting to share our lunch! The sparrows where best landing at our feet for crumbs. There were some nice lads at the next seat feeding them chips out of their fingers while the swans tried to sneak up behind them and pinch their food! The sun was still there despite a few more clouds appearing but we got a little chilly sitting and continued further on the prom where there were more swans in the large puddles in the grass than on the Lac! It was time to go back to the camera shop where I got the cap for 14 Euros before exploring the famous old town with its fast-flowing river and eventually walking back to the van. We were thoroughly entertained by a grebe diving in the clear water and watching it swim underwater for ages before popping up again. With the water being so clear it is amazing to watch :) We decided our best option for the night was to head back to St Jorioz and then head up above Annecy to Semnoz tomorrow. We have skied/snow shoed there in the past and want to make the most of the day before Thursday’s torrential rain arrives! Once we were parked up, we had a cuppa and cake and read for a while. Then being a Tuesday when we usually visit our friend Mary in Felixstowe Mag gives her a ring to catch up before we head back down to the Lac to do the walk we did this morning with the sun setting behind us and the snowy mountains in front of use getting the last of the sun. So, another top day in the mountains with yesterday’s bad weather day soon forgotten – we love this van:) Photo Gallery Here |
