4th July 2020 Windsurfing: Point Clear Wind Direction: WSW Wind Stength: 15/20 Surf / Sea State: All sorts today! Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: cloudy Max Speed: 27.71 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 36.30 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Saturday 4th July- Windsurf **** - Point Clear – cloudy. F2 Zantos 295 with 34 weed fin and Tushingham X-15 7m. F2 282 Ride with Tushingham X-15 6.4m and 34 weed fin. Fin – 27.71 knot max, 24.19 knot ave ., 11.49 knot hour, 20.30 knot mile, 58.20 km., 17.43 knot alpha Headed over to Essex again with fingers crossed it wasn’t as busy as my last couple of visits, it was strange going by myself as Mag decided to stay at home, not great being stuck in the van in a crowded windy carpark! I arrived around 9.30 and most of the Felixstowe contingent were already there with loads of water. There seemed to be plenty of wind and I thought it was going to build, so with most rigging between 6 and 6.5m I stupidly rigged my 5.8 and 6.4 to go out on my 100-lt. ride. By the time I had my wetsuit on the wind didn’t seem very strong so I went out on my Ride 115 and 6.4 which was a complete nightmare, only planing in patches and there was no way I could beat out to the wind line out to sea as there was next to no wind in the lagoon! So I wobbled back to rig my 7m as slalom sailor Shaun was rigging 8m which would have been a better choice for me too! I had a few runs with the bigger sail on the 115 but was still struggling, shame really as the sea was really good, just needed to be powered up! There seemed to be a fairly narrow wind band about a mile from East Mersea out to sea. I headed back for the third time and nearly rigged my 7.8 but decided to try the 7m with my 133 lt. which proved to be the best set up so far although 7.8 would have given me more planning time! Instead of trying to beat out past the shingle bank I sailed into the still very patchy lagoon and then out of the gap as the wind filled in nicely. I was going well towards Brightlingsea and the wind just keep blowing so I carried on to the bird hides 3 miles up the River Colne. That run alone improved a 2-star session to 4 straight away:) In fact I got my best speed of the day up there. The run back was good to so I gybed and tried it again but the wind had eased yet again:( It is always gusty as you pass East Mersea but I hit the wind again sailing way down towards Jaywick but the tide was now going out strongly and it had chopped up! So, time to give the lagoon a try and I had an hour of gybe practice trying my best to avoid the kiters, lucky there was only half a dozen there today:) So in the end it was an OK sail despite the wind being up and down and covered 36 miles with the best being up the Colne. Then all I had to do was de-rig two sail and tie three boards on my trailer and drive the 40 miles home! Supposed to be silly windy from the west and not sure I want to travel again, I need my local bolt hole spot, Levington Marina to open again!!!!
