12th September 2020 Windsurfing: The Manor-Felixstowe Wind Direction: W Wind Stength: 10/18 Surf / Sea State: smooth Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: 17.33 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 17.50 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Saturday 12th September - Windsurf *** - The Manor at Felixstowe – sunny periods. Foil – 17.33 knot max, 15.70 knot ave ., 5.79 knot hour, 14.41 knot mile, 28.05 km., 7.96 knot alpha. Exocet RF 91 AST with Slingshot Hover Glide 76 with Tushingham Lightning 6.5m. After yesterdays epic foil out to Rough Towers today was always going to be a bit of a let down and sadly the wind didn’t play ball today. Funny forecast, breezy first thing then dropping off around lunch time, same tomorrow by the look of things too! With the wind in the west dead offshore there was never going to be many up for a sail today but I meet up with fellow adventurer Andy Mexome at The Manor at 10.15 after dropping Mag off at the end of the prom for her daily exercise, a walk home. Things looked promising as we set up our foil boards, a lovely sunny day with what looked like a good breeze just offshore, when Ian Clarke out on a walk to Landguard said there was 20 knots in the Orwell I rigged 6.5 again although that much loved sail is on its last legs and am now looking for another one while Andy went for 6.2. On launching it took us a bit of a slog to reach the wind line and we then flew to the Orwell but then the wind dropped as I slowly crossed the shipping channel with no ships in sight. The highlight of the day was around 20 yachts racing out to sea from Levington Marina, most with spinnakers flying. Onve clear of the shipping channel I stopped to take some pics of the boats before slowly sailing through the middle of them, they turned by a red bouy out to sea and turned right, shame the wind was light as it would have been fantastic fun racing them but I couldn’t get flying:( Andy came flying over, he has the knack of pumping his gear up in next to no wind, something I still struggle with when it is this light, in fact I needed my 8.5 now. I tried a few runs back and forth and managed to get flying in patches with some rigorous pumping but it was not much fun so decided to head back slowly but did see a seal:) I then found some good gusts in front of Landguard beach and had the best runs of the session in lovely flat water. It was still a bit hit and miss so I had a slow beat back to the beach in light shifty winds. Andy had already packed up and gone home, while Ian had set up but not sailed while David Coles came and decided against it! Still I got home at a decent time and fingers crossed tomorrow is better!
