Friday 1st January- bike ***** - Sunrise two Rivers, Deben to the Orwell – sunny periods and very cold.

Had a nice night at home last night with the new kittens watching our favourite tunes on YouTube loving The Killers at the moment as absolutely nothing on TV, who wants to see boring fireworks off bridges of the world! Loads of fireworks here in Felixstowe too, the cats were not impressed!
We have been planing another bike ride like we did last year and hoped to get to see the first sunrise of 2021, one forecast said sunny start another said cloudy so we had our fingers crossed. We could see the big moon out of our bedroom window with a few clouds passing so we thought we would be lucky. Leaving home at 7.40 very well wrapped as there had been another frost with temperatures set to stay around freezing all day! Reached the cliff top to get our first view of the sea with a nice sky and a bank of cloud on the horizon meaning the 8.03 sunrise might be a few minutes late! Then down onto the prom being careful of any ice and there were already several people sitting on the beach with their flasks waiting for the sun to appear as well as several joggers and in the end, we spotted 3 stand up paddle boarders! Carrying on past The Fludgers, then during inland with still no sign of the sun. We made it to conkerland carpark just in time for the first red to appear making it to the row of beach huts just in time to see the best of the sunrise with a stunning red above us:) We carried on to the row of seats along the cliff and we our bench occupied we found another for a welcome hot drink, cheese straws and the last mince pies with our hands now absolutely frozen! The sun peaked out from behind the bank of cloud as we enjoyed our first breakfast:) There was a bit of a cold breeze on our back so got back on the bikes to head to Felixstowe Ferry. This path was very quiet and with the sea flat and the sun out it was pretty as a picture. At the jetty by the River Deben, we stopped for me to get some pics before returning by road across the golf course. Then with our hands returning to life we turned right into Ferry Lane all the way to Walton. Taking the Maidstone Road Mag returns home while I carry onto the dock viewing point, I have never seen it so quiet with only one car in the car park! Back through Landguard Nature Reserve to the prom with lots of walkers and sea anglers but it had clouded over completely now so we had definitely got to see the best!
At home I joined Mag for our second breakfast of toast and marmalade with a welcome warming cuppa. Then while Mag took down the Christmas tree much to the entertainment of the kittens, I sorted out my photos and did this blog. This really cold weather seems set to continue so not much hope of any windsurfing, not like last year when I manged 8 sessions in January!
