20th April 2021 Hiking - Walking: Newbourne Springs Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny and warm Max Speed: Distance Covered: 2.30 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Tuesday 20th April - walk ***** - Suffolk wildlife trust at Newbourne Springs – foggy on the coast but sunny inland. The usual morning at home, fog again first thing here on the coast and it did start to clear so once again did my exercises in the garden. Our plan was to take our roll down to Landguard on our bikes but I checked the coast webcam and it was very foggy so we decided to head inland going eight miles to Suffolk Wildlife Trusts Newbourne Springs. This is a small wooded valley with a spring feed stream that used to be the source of water for Felixstowe apparently and a popular spot when our boys were small, also the childminded kids we looked after loved it too but we have not been here for many years! The fog quickly disappeared and we had wall to wall warm sunshine managing to park in the small car park this time although it was pretty full but they turned out to be mainly volunteer work party! Entering the small reserve you soon realise just how pretty it is here, across a meadow to the start of the railway sleeper walkway following the course of the crystal clear stream with tiny fish darting about with yellow primroses and celandines, surrounded by a great variety of trees including oak, ash, alder, hazel and hawthorn magnificent in full bloom:) There are loads of bird flitting about or singing in the trees including Black Caps, Willow Warblers, Robins, Blackbirds, Woodpeckers, Peasants, Blue and Great Tits. We passed the biggest tree house we have ever seen then up a slight hill leaving the soggy bit in the valley below. I then decided that I had forgot my GPS so quickly returned to the van for it, leaving Mag birdwatching. We came to the end of the reserve, to stay in the reserve you turn left but we were intrigued where the path straight ahead went? So, we continued for a while and came to farmland near the Waldringfield road before returning, we had way too many clothes on now but as we left a cool, foggy Felixstowe the sunshine caught us out! Back in the reserve we came to a large 4 x 4 track on the right turning right uphill we came to the heath area where we sat by an amazing hawthorn bush for our yummy roll:) Well rested we carried on around the heath and back down to the springs and were given a top display from a Willow Warbler and I actually managed to get some pics:) Down the hill past the water source completing the circuit through the trees again on wooden sleepers. So a top afternoon again enjoying the best that Suffolk has to offer in lovely weather too :) Back to Felixstowe to buy a local paper as I have a pic in then we check the sea front and it is clear on the land but very foggy just offshore, very spooky! Tomorrow is looking promising for a windsurf at The Dip, a spot I haven’t sailed for several months, fingers crossed the wind plays ball, the only down side is its going to be cooler:( Photo Gallery Here Newbourne Springs Here |
