IMPORTANT -- Posting Image Guidelines
justal - 17-1-2005 at 15:54

Before posting your images here, please resize them following the guidelines below.

You may now be better posting your photos in the PHOTO GALLERIES where they will be automatically resized and optimised for you.

Resizing the Image
As a guide most images should be scaled to less than 500x300 pixels This will also allow the image to display nicely within the page and viewers with screen resolutions set to 800x600 will be able to see the image without too much scrolling.

Saving the File
Most photos will be saved as a jpeg and this is the preferred filetype. When saving an image as a jpeg most software will allow you to compress the image. Usually compresing the image by 25-50% will reduce the filesize to a suitable size without compromising the quality of the inage for display on the web (You only need high resolution, high quality images for printing). Of course this will be unneseccary if the file has already undergone jpeg compression.

Naming the file
If the file is a jpeg then give it a lowercase suffix (.jpg) rather than an uppercase suffic (.JPG) as this will then allow the image to appear within the forums themselves rather than as an attachement.

The result
Once the photo has been resized and saved as a jpeg (which will only take you a couple of seconds to do) the filesize will probably be down to less than 20 kb (rather than the 1400 kb that is more likely if the file is copied directly from a half decent digital camera).

Doing this will keep bandwidth and hosting space wastage to a minimum, allow people with slow internet connections to see the images without waiting hours for them to download, and will keep your webmaster happy too!

The above are guidelines only, but any posts with images that are far too big will be deleted.

Cheers.

Al.

Al,

How do you resize the image? Have tried all the standard software that comes with the pc but none seem to have the option of changing the size of the image.

p.s. The pictures are from a cd or have been e-mailed, not downloaded froma camera.

I knew someone was going to ask this.... I'll get back to you once I've had a look at some PC software as I don't use a PC.... I'm sure there must be a program that comes with Windows that will do it for you.

OK, just had a quick look through a brand new install of Windows XP (with no 3rd party software)

Open the image file in Paint (Start menu, All Programs, Accessories, Paint) go to the Image menu and select Attributes. In there you can enter the dimensions of the image in pixels, however it doesn't seem to allow you to constrain the proportions.

So, instead select the Image menu and then stretch/skew in here you can enter a percentage for both the horizontal and vertical stretch... Give them bothe the same value (obviously less than 100% to reduce the image size). You can then check the image size in pixels from the Attributes menu item mentioned above.

Does that make sense?? Paint is a pretty basic program, and I'm sure there are plenty of other out there for a PC (probably lots that are fee as well) that will give you greater control.

Al.

P.S. How was that for a speedy reply... especially seeing as I've never even used a PC and Windows XP before!

Cheers for the prompt reply Al, I'll try it after work today though I'm not sure you can save images as jpegs in Paint.

sorry al if i sometimes post BIG as in the last loop seq
but its a shame to cut down some of don c photo's

ps trying to get him to come up on our trip as "chief photo guy " so get your sail nice and stickered , ho,ho,ho

justal - 25-7-2008 at 04:44

No problem Kelvin, you usually hotlink to the photos from Don's server anyway so it isn't too bad.

Someone posted some 'inappropriate' images yesterday which is why this post was flagged up. I removed the images - and kept them for future reference!

I'd better learn to sail a bit better too if there will be an official photographer in attendance!
