Bournemouth Surfing

Hi there,

I'm moving to Bournemouth for a year. I'm from Brazil and I'm used to surfing in warm water 15-27c .

I was wondering if you guys could help me out with some questions I have:

How cold is the water over there and do you guys surf in the winter also?

How big are the waves over there and on average how many good surfing days do you get a year?

Is it worth bringing my shortboard?

Cheers:-)

I'm not a South Coast surfer myself so don't have any detailed knowledge of Bournemouth but....

The water is cold, but not too cold... Probably in the 8-18¬?C range, and yes, we surf all year round... Winter is the best time of year for swell.

Size of the waves vary of course from completely flat to moderate... South Coast doesn't really get anything massive and it is very fickle and unpredictable, but you can surf fairly often, especially in the winter if you aren't too bother about getting quality waves...

If you have transport and can get around the South Coast you may find some spots with better quality waves but if you can get to Cornwall or Devon then you'll be able to get much better surf.

Yep, bring your shortboard. The South Coast won't provide you with world class conditions but you'll be able to surf fairly regularly if you are desperate.
