Wanted to ask the locals, are there any decent sized fish cruizing around the estaury or off ynyslas / dovey? and if so, what type/size?

Couldn't say what it was, but a few decent sized fish jumped not too far from me while I was on the estuary today, and I have seen some pretty big sea bass in the Leri before now.

according to informed and well educated fish scientist, there should be some good sea trout in there too.
i put my spinning rod in norman the other week.

It's simple, tie a length of line to the back of your board with a spinner on - blat around for a few hours and come back with a tasty sea trout in tow!

Seriously some mates of mine used to do that behind their windsurf boards in Australia tho it's gotta be fairly dodgy with all that line and a nice treble hook to get caught up in.

I was chatting to a gut who was in a canoe in the middle of the channel fishing today.... Said he hadn't caught anything, but had been told the Bass and sea trout can be quite good.... I did see a few biggish fish jump near me while I was again as well. Might have to get a rod!

There's always mackerel past the bar around 6 in the mrnin if you're willing to get up that early! Not big fish but they're there

I think Neil is refering to me as his source of reliable info (I never said it was reliable).

Fish to found in the estuary now are Bass (the best eating), Mullet (tend to hang around sewage outlets, can taste as much), sea trout and salmon. The sea trout are running now, and I have heard very good current reports for most of the other Welsh rivers (upto 16lb). They will run in large numbers on a high tide and fishing for them is best during the hours of darkness. Finding a good spot may not be easy though. Spinning (with spoons or even better repala type lures)or fly fishing being the preferred methods.

Now for the serious bit, as I work for the EA Midlands I'm not up to full speed on all the Welsh Byelaws (they are very complicated) so please seek further advice or log onto the page given below. If you were fishing the river you would need a rod licence (Salmon and Sea Trout licence £63.75 available at your local PO pays my wages), fishing in the sea coastal waters is free although you may need landowners permission.

From what I have found out the statement below is the limit for coastal fishing, fish further upstream than this without a licence and you are likely to be nabbed procecuted and end up with a criminal record (harsh).

"A line drawn across the river Dyfi, from the point at Trefri to the south-western abutment of the railway bridge across the Tre'r-ddol stream (river Clettwr)"

While on the subject, what's the weaver fish status this summer ? We're in Aberdovey in a weeks time for our annual pilgrimage....

Been fishing out of Borth today, no wind so borrowed Andy's rod and another kind chaps canoe.

All I caught were huge weaver fish, me being fishy I was stunned at the size of these weavers. I thought that they only grew to about 10-15cm the ones I caught were 30-40cm (nasty).

Oh they took spinners, so quite agressive.

I'm sure Peter Benchley could write a book about these devil fish.

leo, there are a few of us keen to spear fish off the rocks in borth, by the life boat station. the leri is the best place to fish for bass.

Yep, Shem and I were gonna go apear fishing yesterday off the rock in Borth but never got around to it.... Friends I had staying over the weekend said they saw some huge fish (presumably bass) in the Leri as well....

Could be bringing dinner home with me soon!!
