Wednesday 16th October – Windsurf ***** Gruissan - Sunny – Xantos + 7
and 6.4 X15 - 38 and 32 fins Wind NW 20/25
With this being the only day with wind forecast we left our nice spot in
the pine woods above the saltworks at Gruissan early. It was a good job
really as it was very busy with Grape pickers and hunters so we were on the
beach at Ancien Gran du Gazel after safely making it through the rock
chicane by about 9:) We had a top spot with great views to Gruissan one
way and Port la Nouvelle the other. While Mag did her exercises on the
beach I rigged 7 and 6.4 and after a quick breakfast I was on the water
just after 10 and had it all to myself for an hour!!! My plan was to try
for a lot of miles and a good hour and ended up doing four sessions in the
day lasting up to 90 minutes each. The first session I was a bit
underpowered to start with then ended up over powered as the wind increased
along with the chop:( I finished the session with a run to Port la Nouvelle
but there was less wind there and as always the weed problem where the
Etang enters the sea! The second session I changed to the 6.4 with a
smaller fin and although I got my fastest time (just over 30kts) I always
struggle here to get fast speeds and I can’t keep in the flat water both
ways. After a short break I switched back to the 7m keeping the smaller
fin and had my best session with the wind switching a bit more square and
the water flattening off so I could keep close to the shore both ways most
of the time and past Mag several times as she walked miles along the beach.
I had done about 85 nautical miles and wanted to get the 100 so although
knackered and with the wind a bit up and down went for another hour
finishing up with 106 nautical miles. This is a great spot sailing flat
out in the sparkling sunshine heading towards the Pyrenees :) With the
wind all but gone and the sun setting, we were the last to leave the beach
and found a great spot up in the woods overlooking Gruissan Etang and
Castle. The only downside of the whole day was trying to check the results
from the GPS where I got loads of files and lots seem missing!!!:( but our
laptop is playing up so I hope I can sort it out when we get home???
