19th August 2016 Mt. Biking: Tunstall Forest,Orford,Iken and Snape Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: cloudy with showers Max Speed: Distance Covered: 17 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Friday 19th August – Bike ***** cloudy with light rain :( Went to bed last night with a problem with our bed as it had dropped a little so something was wrong but still had a good night’s sleep, sadly yesterday’s lovely sunshine had been replaced with cloud! Still we love our van and had the carpark all to ourselves until 9 ish when a large horse box with 3 horses arrived plus a few dog walkers and mountain bikers. We were thinking it was going to be a pain if we had to take our van to Bilbos to repair the bed! But we removed the seat cover and discovered that the 4 bolts holding the side had come completely undone and the other side was very loose! We quickly tightened the door side and then with a bit of team work Mag and I managed to refit the bolts. It was very awkward as it was a bit tight to get your hand in the gap but we did it and were very pleased:) Relaxing breakfast and read, then I thought the cure for the pulled muscle in my back would be another bike ride! We were all kitted up when it started to drizzle:( undeterred we set off anyway and for the first couple of miles we returned to the Viking Trail then when we reached the Orford Road we turned left and the next stop was the impressive Orford Castle:) We had a nice chat to a follow cyclist from St Ives in Cambridgeshire and passed on the £7 castle entry fee! We continued through lovely Orford to the Quay. It was typical British Summertime weather as the many people on the Quay crabbing and watching the boats were getting wet in the rain:( Leaving Orford we turned right on a narrow dirt covered road towards Iken where we passed loads of pigs and stopped to watch as they had just been fed:) They were hilarious climbing in the feed troughs and scrapping over the last mouthfuls! There were fields of onions and potatoes in full purple bloom and huge round hay bales. Several dead end turns to the right looked interesting and we might explore them another time. Reaching the sign to Iken church we rode down to have a quick look and then on to the large heath carpark which could be good to park for the night another time if we could get under the height barrier. We then followed the footpath to Snape Maltings, over wooden duckboards and reed beds where we again had a nice chat to another cyclist from Colchester. We stopped on Snape bridge to watch a small dinghy setting off back to Slaughden and the tourist boat return – making the most of the high tide. It was only a couple of miles back to the van for a welcome roll for lunch:) With the weather now pretty miserable we decided to head for home as we had to collect my sail from the menders in Woodbridge and stock up at Lidl – a top top couple of days in our lovely little van :) Photo Gallery here |
