Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: NW Wind Stength: 12-18 Surf / Sea State: flat / swell Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: sunny Max Speed: 26.2 kts (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 28.3 nm (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Another perfect 10 star 4 .5 hrs at Bradfield with Keith F (struggling with
a H/O) the 3 Hurrels, James and Dave. Arrived around midday to greet the
others launching. It didn't look windy but they said NW/ F4. Wind was
coming down the middle or swinging on shore in gusts. The middle was windy
and they flew across the river...game on. All had either 7.5 or 8.5 so
rigged 8.6 Gaastra Savage to my dog slow Patrik F-ride 145L. Great first
run broad down to Harkstead - 22kts but it wasn't windy, just perfect free
riding. The JP would have hit 24kt. Tweak the mast foot back to 1/2 way,
switch 50 SL fin to the bd owns swept back Choco Freeride 48 fin, and it
did feel looser and less sticky. You have to continually pump the bd off
wind to get it going.
Its a nice freeride board and I can tack it easily, which tell me its too
*hit, stable cos my tacking is poor. The straps are too inboard, you cant
push the fin, and the back of the bd is too wide and square. Downhauled the
sail to add twist as it was getting windier and back handing. At first the
Hurrells were killing me with their £30 dog bds, def sandwich filling for
Craig and Neil in particular. Great runs by all of us, with nothing in top
end speed - but the old JP 146 pro excite ride would have slaughtered them
at full pelt. Bugger. Runs were now 23kts and both Craig and I had 2 balls
out runs all the way to Harkstead, fantastic reaching, again even but he
would have done me if I held a reaching line. I had to continually head off
downwind to keep the board planning hard..its crap! At last we hit 26.2kts
with the 8.6 set to manufacturer’s settings and twisting nicely. The wind
was 18kts gusting 20kts.
Tacking now is useful as I gained a few metres for the upwind drag back to
Bradfield. Just perfect sailing with no issues on flat water. Pretty much
stayed on the water for 4 .5 hrs (other than tweaking). The Hurrells
noticed the board quicker with a swept back 48 fin so stayed with that for
the rest of the session. The 50cm upright which was perfect on the JP was
dragging on the Patrik. More downhaul as starting to get over powered in
the middle and had to bear away till the other side of the middle. Should
have now hit 28kts but the 26.2 was it. Great freeride board for a
beginner, with nice straps placing, very stable, tacks and gybes a
dream,,,but I like corky unstable boards as they are faster. Bradfield is a
brilliant river location when Felixstowe is off shore and we sail 3hrs be4
high and 2 after, James was still milking it 2.5 hrs after high! Covered
32.6 miles (28.3nm). Now looking for a fast 145 Slalom board. Blisters
everywhere and back ache so Saturday forecase at Felixstowe SW 15kts could
be just right.
