Paragliding - Gliding: Corndon, nr. Churchstoke Wind Direction: NE Wind Stength: 5mph Surf / Sea State: n/a Air Temperature: 15C Sea Temperature: n/a Weather: Sunshine, overdevelopin Cumulus Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Hanggliding
Decided to head of with Jeff towards the Mynd way with a 2 hour drive and
was debatin whether to fly from Sarn or Corndon. Heard the wind was a bit
of from Sarn so drove up the horrible track to Corndon. Got there and there
were about 10 other Paragliders and 6 other Hang gliders there which is a
bit of a rarity gettin so many hanggliders in one place.
The sky was looking great with pleanty of nice cumulus around with little
spread out so got rigged up and a quite a few paragliders and 1 or 2 hang
gliders had already gone xc.
Eventually got rigged up and the sky was overdeveloping meaning the lift
would be very patchy. everyone was startin to stuggle and quite a few went
down. It was one of those days where the winds were very light and it was a
struggle to stay up in the patchy lift. Some people took of, circled in a
few small thermals and then came to top land before the heavy sink arrived.
My time came to launch and suddenly the paragliders were circling around in
the thermal activity. I decided to go for it and launched; soon as I took
of my vario went dead due to forgetting to charge up the batteries the
night before, Doh!. It was a case of using my intutition searchin for the
lift. Caught a few weak thermals and managed to get 200 foot or so above
the ridge, circled around for a good 5 mins searching for the lift and then
came the cycle of heavy sink so decided to quickly top land.
All in all, it was a great day and good to get a flight under my belt
having not flown since last August, especially pleasing is that I managed
quite well without my vario and managed to stay up when some people with
varios went down into the valley below. Probably not worth the 2 hour trip
to the english/welsh border but fying can be a frustrating sport. The
furthest distance a hangie (Miles Davidson) British team pilot got was only
12k which shows it wasn't a brilliant day after all. Hopefully the next few
days will continue to give some brilliant flying conditions. Giving it a 4
star as it was great to get some flying in and on a new site
