Decided to try for a 50 mile bike ride after being OK on a few 30 milers.
Air the tyres to max 70 psi on my Hybrid/MTB, water and loaded a couple of energy bars. Weather seemed OK so went with short sleeves which turned out to be a bad error.
I tend to loop on myself around west Ipswich so that if I get a breakdown taxi fare isn’t excessive if I suffer a breakdown as partner dont drive.
I have the course marked out speed/time markers and after the first 5 miles to Claydon, I met headwind and was feeling cold. I made it 2 mins better than best time, so well pleased, but I didn't feel right and continued to feel very cold and didn't want to drink.
10 miles and was still 2 mins up so instead of turning back I thought I would warm up as HR was running at 120 which is high for me on this sort of ride.
Hit the bypass and was flying towards Purdis/ Bucklesham and despite catching a long traffic light and many cars at roundabouts the 15 mile marker bang on target only losing 2 mins.
Switched on to the old Felixstowe road towards Felixstowe and was happy to see drop heads going in either direction including a team of 3 ladies heading to Felixstowe. I thought I would tag them, but no chance! They were riding 18mph even on up gradients. Def regular riders and they left me for dead of the flat and down slopes.
HR was high and I was freezing, so just happy to hit the 20mls on target for about 1hr 33. I turned early at Trimley as wasn't feeling great. Still hadn't drunk any water and wasn't thirsty so chucked it away as too much ballast. I decided to stop chasing and cruise at my usual 12/12 mph even on down slopes just to get home and of course the riders just blitz me. The run to Purdis seemed very long as I took a short cut, and was bored, and well peed off, with 30 miles to go!
Decided to drop to 40 miles and to be honest would have given up but for yet another 4 leisure riders going my way. They were normal bikes so well within my speed range and unbelievable they went all the way to Claydon old road, which really lifted me to carry on.
I was short of miles so looped the Claydon to Sproughton Road which was very busy with traffic so stayed on the cycle path / pavement which slowed me up. 35 miles and my knees were bad, was cold and pretty much was just turning over the pedals and I still had 2 miles to get to home.
Stats 40.48 miles x 11.7 mph taking 3 hours 27 mins. Not good but happy I got to 40 and the early splits up to 30 mph was on target.
I rushed in to have a hot shower and 2 cups of really sweet tea + biscuits and started feeling much better. Finished off by laying in bed with the electric blanket on. After 2 hours made full recovery.
Def wont make that mistake again! I should have worn full length shirts with under garment and carry my wind cheater. Maybe should have loaded up with the energy bars an hour before to gain some benefits on the ride - again next time.
I think 30 is going to be my go to ride because longer cause grief to my knees and is not a good idea for me anyway, especially as I am only riding for fitness until I get back to gym. Might even use knee support on the ride.
Still thinking about buying a gravel bike and selling my hybrid MTB, as I could still ride dirt. The road bikes looks so much faster, so would love to try one before splashing out. It maybe I hate the aggressive riding position for long rides.
Rest day tomoz and analyse stats to see where weaknesses can be corrected. Am not really hating the lock down and def not bored at home, as working thru loads off my to do list. Working from home was handy although not much work coming in at the mo.
