After yesterdays complete washout where we had pretty much nonstop rain
today the sun made a welcome return, mild again too:) A few foilers had
agreed to meet at The Manor beach at Felixstowe fairly early to make the
most of low water and hopefully miss the sea anglers as this is also a
popular fishing spot too. I arrived first at around 9.15 and it looked
perfect, wall to wall sunshine, a nice breeze and a fairly flat sea so I
set about setting up my foil giving the wind a chance to settle. Andy M
arrived and decided to go with his 6.2, it was a little difficult to gauge
as the WSW wind is very slightly off, I would have rigged my 6.5 but
destroyed that a few weeks ago, so if any one has an old Tushingham
Lightning gathering dust in their garage please message me. So, I took a
chance with my current favourite foiling sailing my 7m Lightning, expecting
to have to change down. I headed off first and went broad up the coast
playing with the swell on lovely long runs ending up at The Dip and the 7m
was great in all but the strongest gusts! With the wind building it was a
fantastic beat back with the sea quite big especially at The Fludgers! I
was thinking of changing to a fin board but the wind had swung further to
the west and was up and down so stuck with the foil. It is much smoother
conditions at The Manor and I went for some faster runs but did end up in
the water a couple of times by pushing too hard so eased off and headed up
the coast again. With the wind dropping I returned from The Fludgers, I hit
a piece of wood on one run and had to stop to check the foil, with
everything OK I carried on. I am trying a few more gybes now, nothing
pretty but at least I am staying on the board, well most of the time! So,
four foilers had fun today, me, Andy, Michael and Robert, maybe the same
tomorrow or I might save myself for Saturday where I might be going to
Southend but haven’t made up my mind yet????
