Sunday 13th June - Windsurf * - The Dipat Felixstowe – sunny and hot:)

Foil – 15.43 knot max, 8.11 knot ave., 0.00 knot hour, 0.00 knot mile, 1.70 km.,0.00 knot alpha.

Exocet RF AST 91 with Slingshot Hover Glide 76 with Tushingham Lightning 8.5m.

After an amazing early morning 5-hour bike ride around the Felixstowe area we arrived home knackered in time for lunch, I even had time to do my exercises but then David Coles put on WhatsApp that he was heading down to The Dip and as I had few crap sessions this month, I was keen to see if things would improve, perhaps in hind sight I should have stayed at home! Arrived at the beach at 3.10, the tide was still fairly high, the sea a bit lumpy, not ideal but it was sunny and hot with around 12 knots blowing onshore from the right and David was ready to go with his big race kit and a 9,5 rig. After David got off the beach with no problems, I decided to give it a try, local windsurfer Paul Smith who was down with his family paddle boarding said there would probably be an hour of wind before it dropped so I was not intending to go far. I quickly set up my foil and rigged my 8.5, shortie on, bag of spares on I got off the beach fine and was soon up and flying in a fairly big sea in wall-to-wall sunshine with the usual messy white water as the River Deben enters the sea. Things were looking promising for a good session, I tacked out by the red and white bouy, ran down a wave to fly and then things went wrong big style! Another big snapping sound and I knew straight away my fuselage had broken for the second time:( I waited for my front wing to float to the surface like it did last time, I even stood on my board but could not spot it! I then sailed slowly back through the big sea, no problem as I still had my foil mast to act like a fin. I landed OK but then discovered that when my front wing snapped off it hit the back of my board making a large hole!!!! I was really feed up about my nice new foil board up until this point in pretty pristine condition considering I have used it 89 times! I thought it was time for another foil but funds are tight so was not sure what to do but at least I got back safely with no injuries so could have been much worse! I then took some pics of David returning from a foil up the River Deben as the wind was dropping, at least one of us had had a good sail! David was kind enough to say he could mend my board and I went home to break the news to Mag!
The latest on the story is hopefully our house insurance will pay so I can replace the wing and fuselage, I had been keen to upgrade to a Slingshot Phantasm carbon foil which look amazing but at £2500 I think I will have to stick with my Hover Glide Infinity and be more careful in the future!
