23rd February 2022 Windsurfing: Levington Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: 10/30 Surf / Sea State: smooth Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: 10 Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: 17.61 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 25.50 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) After yesterday’s poor session I was keen to give it, another try today and hoped for better things. With low water at 9.36 so was not in any hurry to get to Levington. Woke to wall-to-wall sunshine and what looked like marginal winds so arranged with Robert to meet at the marina around 11.30 leaving me plenty of time to do my exercises in the lovely warm sunshine, I was indoors but it was great to have the sun shining through the patio door:) Leaving home at 11 I dropped Mag off on the way so she could have a walk and was surprised just how breezy it was! The onshore SW was easily gusting over 20 knots and the river was still fairly low, I wasted no time setting up my foil and then again sail size??? I went with 6.5 which was fine although there were some big gusts and with no sign of Robert, he had been held up in road works I launched by the marina wall. With the wind onshore and the tide coming in it was slow getting away as I was pushed into the marina but 14 tacks later, I was out in deep water and soon realised I could have rigged 5.2! The good thing about foiling is when the big gusts hit you can just sheet out and the larger sail definitely gives you more flying time. Here on the river, you can usually find an area of water to suit your sail size. With it being particularly strong on the corner I headed upriver making sure to stay clear of the banks as it was still shallow there but I did run aground while gybing and got my foil stuck in the mud! I had to pull the board out backwards in the end and then wash the mud off! The nice thing about this section of river towards Pin Mill is it is lovely and flat and I had fun gybing, it is definitely improving, well most of the time, certainly helped by the use of rotational sails! I must have been out nearly an hour before Robert appeared on the water using his 4.5 which was fine to start with but he admitted he could have done with his 5.3! Nothing fast today just great fun sailing long two mile runs with the usual birds passing, I even spotted a seal, who popped its head up to check me out. Sadly, the sun mostly disappeared and in the end the wind went patchy but I lasted well over two hours, a tad chillier today and gloves were needed. With over 25 miles covered it was time to call it a day, my feet were getting cold but my new Spartan wetsuit is working really well:) Pack up, showered and home for some of Mags yummy homemade cake with a cuppa. I then got a nice surprise when I discovered I had a full page spread of my pics of the recent Storm Eunice battering Felixstowe a few days ago in the local paper and 7 pics were used, so chuffed :) Although windy again tomorrow it is looking very cold so might have to miss a few days?
