2nd windfoil sail this year and again, at Bradfield. The NW wind turned up yet again, with sunshine.
After a few WA messages I decided to make the 8am drive to Manningtree with high tide 11ish, and glad I did because Bradfield was packed out. I have never seen so many vehicles. I caught up with loads of sailors with a good mixture of Fins and Wind foil but as always dominated by the wingers. It seems just about most windsurfers / wind foilers are now wingers mainly.
It was howling down the middle of the rivers, (white caps swell) prob a good F5 but less at the edges, and the 4 fins were ripping across at speed. I thought about my 130 fin bd, but have purchased a Starboard Freeride 85 wind foil board, I needed to spend time with it, as it’s a very different bd to my previous Patrik race board. Its very lively and unforgiving. I rigged 6.2 as most WF did, while fins ranged from 7m to 6. Think if I had a 5.5 I would have rigged that as I launched towards the middle I was way over powered. Colsey went out on his long race board with 9.5 metres and didn’t even look overpowered!
Last sail I was over foiling off wind, so I moved the mast foot a couple of inches forward, but I now know, it needs to be jammed at the front in strong wind, as again, as soon I went broad front foot pressure was too hard and I could not keep the nose down, so had to head upwind on gusts, which killed all the speed. Gusts were F5/6 in the middle most times so I didn’t enjoy the downwind legs, as again over foiled. DC said sheet in even harder but I kept doing the opposite putting no power in the back hand so the board stayed low. The sides were great for me, F4 and flat!
More tweaking in high winds me thinks, as I was only comfortable all day, close reaching, in both straps. The setup was 900 Fr wing, (too big) 800 next time, 330 stab set at zero was over foiling off wind, so that will go minus -1 or 1.5 and will switch the 95 to 105 fuse for a bit more stability off wind as the board is very short.
Wingers were looking good in pretty strong winds. I went up the Mistley end but it was too windy and really I should have stayed at the Holbrook bay end, as sailors there said the wind was lighter and not so gusty. Fin sailors were by far the fastest on the water, and I was envious watching them blast across the river 25 knots +! One sailor hit 30kts and DC on his long Starboard Long board said he hit 30 mph downwind! Another 5 star sail for me and most I think which ended with an hour steam / sauna, which cleared any lactic build up for sure!
