Wow!!!.... What a session, its isn't often we get stonking SE's but when we
do and it is coupled with a swell then it leads to the best front-side
wave-riding you can imagine!!
The tide was getting a little high so the wind on the inside was a little
flukey at times but once out the back I was totally maxed out on my 4.5m,
my 3.5m would have been enough and some of the gusts were real shoulder
wrenching, butt-clunching moments!!! (44 knots according to the weather
station, but it was windier than that a little way out to sea... Aberporth
Bouy was recording closer to 50 knots!). At least it meant I could fly
upwind, gybe and then look for a wave to ride. With so much power I could
catch the waves early and get loads of turns in with some real flat out
bottom turns and big off the lips sending flumes of spray up. As the sun
set these big arcs of spray looked beautiful, and its amazing just how much
effort you can put into a turn when nicely powered on a decent wave. Some
of the sets were a solid 4 foot, with 6-8 foot faces, but with plenty of
wind in my 4.5m sail I had the confidence to really attack them.
We need more days like that!. Shame there was no-one else around.
