Kite buggying - boarding: Les Hemmes Wind Direction: WNW Wind Stength: 20-30 Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: 9 Sea Temperature: Weather: Overcast, occasional sun Max Speed: 42.3mph (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 51.5 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Rich and I had the usual 6am start, got to Les Hemmes and the beach looked
wet and it was totally deserted, concerned about the wet beach and a
rumoured ban we decided to check out Bray Dunes. At Bray Dunes wind was
cross sure and there wasnt much sand (well it was only 2 hours after a neap
high tide) and what sand there was was pretty soft so watched a couple of
kitesurfers braving it before heading back to Les Hemmes. When we returned
the beach was drier and there were 3 German buggiers setting up so out we
went. There was standing water on the first 100m of beach out from the
dunes then it was dry with a film of sand blowing over the top.
I started on the 2.2m and was flying using the beach to the east of the car
park (sand was slightly ripply but hard), clocking speeds in the high
30\'s, soon decided the beach and conditions were good enough to try a
bigger faster kite and try and beat the 40mph mark for the first time.
Setup the 2.8m and easily clocked 40.4mph, clocked 41.6mph and over 28
miles and decided it was time to stop for lunch.
After lunch headed west towards Calais, buggied all the way as far west as
we could get right up to the old hoverport and the Calais harbour wall (5.1
miles from the car park), then did an awesome fast downwinder back stopping
for some fast runs on the best bit of beach which was about 2 miles west of
the car park. Clocked a new top speed of 42.3mph which I am very happy with
but there is still more in the tank for next time!!
Wind died towards the end so did some cruising about and packed up just
before it got dark, top day!!
