The build up to the weekend had been immense, counting down the days and
then the hours.
6am saturday morning, the time had come....I loaded the bike onto the
trailer and set off to meet Col at Telford services, we needed to be at the
venue to sign in for 10am. We arrived to see what looked like dirtbike
heaven..:). The saturday was only the race experience day and and we
thought we might have an advantage over stevebus and the other's by getting
in an extra day of practice before the main event........WRONG!.
It's almost laughable to think we thought we would be able to do two
days....in fact I did'nt even last an hour. We kitted up eager to get out
and sample the track. We could see the course snaking off up the hillside
and just could'nt wait to get going. We decided to stay together for the
first lap and just trundle round to check out the course, but as soon as we
were allowed through the gate and onto the track, down came the red mist
and we were off like no tomorrow......lol...Col immiediatly started
flicking mud... :o. so i waited for the first available chance and slid by
him, around the outside if i remember correctly. That was my only moment of
glory and it was all to come to an ending within minutes. The lower part of
the course was set out with tape essing through the field with really nice
hairpin turns that you could slide out of. As i looked behind I seemed to
have made some ground on Colin....Great .....just as I'd planned
it!!!!!...and then as the track cut of the field and started uphill, I
realised i was heading towards a big climb. I tried to build up speed to
carry momentum because I had no idea how high the hill was, as the climb
steepened the bike started to lose power and suddenyly it dawned on me that
i was'nt going to make it, at this point Colin came thundering past me like
a man possesed, that was the last i saw of him..:(....About 2/3 of the way
up the hill the bike finally gave up, and there I was stuck on the side of
a dirty great hill, could'nt go up and could'nt go down. I eventually
managed to get the bike re-started and by running along side it and revving
the cr@p out of it managed to get it to the top. I was now totally fcucked
but on my way again, nevertheless. The course then went out and further up
across moorland before sweeping back down through a technical (ish) forest
section, where I found a qeue of people and lots of marshalls. I took my
place in line and slowly made my way towards the place where the bikes were
disapearing over. I had'nt had chance to see what i was going to be riding
down until my front wheel was almost over the edge...:O....A very steep
drop down muddy a bank that was lined with marshalls to help the stricken.
I was ok though and managed to slide my way to the bottom with brakes on
full. There was a sharp left at the bottom and no room to run off, so it
was'nt possible to roll down. I was now feeling very hot and sweaty and was
trying my hardest not to fall off. There were obstacles at every turn and
absolutely no place to relax. I eventually completed the lap and set off on
my 2nd, which was to be my last. The bike just would not make it up the big
hill and in my desperate attempt to get up, the engine seized. So there i
was, once again stuck on the side of the hill, lunatics flying past me like
they were racing for the world title. By the time i had pushed the bike
back to the pit area, I was totally fineshed, I even had to get 2 kids to
help me push the bike last bit, it was so cacked in mud that it would'nt
even roll down hill...lol....Col entered the 1 hour race on saturday and
did really well, battling it out and passing quite a few people on the
track, I counted 3 laps before he dissapeared....???????....After about 20
mins i began to wonder what must have happened to him.....eventually he
came out of the forest and signaled towards the pits...it was over!...I ran
over eager to hear what had happned to him. He looked tired as he parked
the KTM up and immiediately slumped to the ground, exhausted. I'll let him
tell you about his little excursion off the track...lol....Fortunately the
marshalls were there to help him up and start his bike for him (he was
upside down)....lol...Absolutley brilliant effort though....total
commitment, balls to the wall. New found respect for those guys that are
doing it for real, need to get in a bit better shape for the next
one......we'll be back...:)
would've been 5 stars if i had'nt had techincal problems.
