16th June 2019 Windsurfing: Felixstowe Manor Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: F4/5 Surf / Sea State: Lumpy Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 22.19 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 14.8 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Nice father’s day session at the Felixstowe manor with Andy Stu Mark D and Pete. The other regulars had split up some at the dip and others Wrabness / Bradfield. Sea was biggish just after high tide and wind around F4+ and looked 7.2 weather with my Bolt 135 (too big but my only option at the mo for that wind). As always with windsurfing, either the wind drops or increases after rigging, in this case 7.2 too big. Andy first on the water was way over and went for 6.6. The sea was now foaming up a bit - so dumped the 135L for my 110 RRD Firemove and 6.7 Hellcat. No sooner I rigged that Andy came in again saying over powered - so even be4 hitting the water had to rig the 3rd sail 6.2, and was now getting peed off. The gusts were F5+ and the lulls F4, not quite enough for the Firemove. All the others were scrambling round changing kit. This was my first ride on the board and the launch went well but the ride was uncomfortable due to the foot straps setup for slalom in the huge sea. Pete was going way too fast on a 105 Severne Fox, but the others on wave kit looked great in the high wind. My board was travelling too fast heeled up on the outer straps, so flying over waves. Landed pretty soon after and moved straps to wave setup in board straps at the front and single rear straps and the board went like a dream. The 110 RRD firemove is a smooth ride in that setup in big seas, running rings around the swell, slowing or speeding up just by toe action. In fact the strange thing about the day was when I sheeted in, nothing happens, unlike my slalom kit which takes! I did drop way too many gybes on the day as I tried gybing old school, staying wrong side. Waterstarting was tiring but stayed out a fair while. Bit choppy going out and tried to hit a few ramps (unsuccessfully lol), but had some nice ride coming in off the big swells as the board allow full carves on the wave face, absolutely brilliant. 110L is a sinker for my weight, so in the lulls I lost groynes immediately - but luckily the wind stayed pretty consistent and in fact went overpowered a few times and 5.5 would have been good. All sailors had a good day in the sunshine, and I was shattered at the end. Whilst packing up the wind whipped up the sand which must have gone to F6. Def will leave straps to 3 setup in board and don’t bother with speed on that board which is def nice free ride. |
