12th August 2019 Hiking - Walking: Sutton Hoo and Rendlesham Forest Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Mainly cloudy with some heavy rain and sun late. Max Speed: Distance Covered: Monday 12th – walks ***** Sutton Hoo and Rendlesham Forest – Mainly cloudy with some heavy rain and sun late. Our son Robert, his partner Hannah and Grandson Arlo are having a week’s holiday here in Suffolk:) With me having a mega speedsailing day at Southend, missing 40 knots by a whisker I didn’t get to see them until the evening. Then Sunday 11th we played brio trains, making a mega track before heading down to The Dip. Rob enjoyed a great kitesurfing session with his friend Ben, his first time on the water since his knee accident nearly four years ago. He did great while Hannah and I had fun with Arlo on the beach as the wind increased to 25 knots! Then we all went to visit our other son Dan and partner Jay in their lovely little first home having a nice time. Rob booked us into the Rendlesham Forest camp site for a couple of nights from Monday. With us all being National Trust members we headed to Sutton Hoo as the exhibition hall is now open:) Despite being a dull Monday with rain coming, the carpark was pretty full but we found a spot in the overflow section. With Arlo asleep we have lunch with goodies bought at Lidl while waiting for him to wake up. With lunch out of the way we walk to the centre and start by playing on the large metal sculpture of a Saxon Longboat before heading over to the burial mounds where the Saxon treasure was unearthed in 1939. The highlight was a group of kids getting soaked by a farmer’s sprayer as it watered his turf crop. Then Arlo was in 7th Heaven as a green tractor came past. We went to the builder’s compound where a large viewing tower is being built, watching the different plant in action – he loves heavy plant! Then it was back to Mrs Pretty’s house, the land owner who started the dig just before the start of World war Two, spotting pensioners whizzing about on electric mobility scooters borrowed from the NT while Arlo watches a Cherry picker being unloaded from a large low loader! Then while we are in the house it absolutely tips it down so we sit in comfy chairs and wait for Mag to return (with two umbrellas) as she has gone back to the van for a jumper! With the rain easing we set off to find Mag with Arlo and Hannah having great fun in the puddles:) We then look at the treasure found buried in a Saxon longboat which had been dragged up the hill from the River Deben. Apparently, he was a king and loads of things were found including his mask, sword, horse harness, pots, buckets and gold coins. There were boards explaining the times and how things were made which was very interesting as were the relics, some original some copies. We then had to drive to Rendlesham Forest campsite and got a bit lost but Hannah got her phone out to lead the way and we found it in the end! As you know we have had well over 1000 nights away in our campervan with nearly all of the them ‘wild’ camping so being on a site was something new to us but with Rob in a tent we had no choice. In the end it wasn’t too bad despite being on the two worst pitches on the site - right by the toilet block - which made it quite busy with people and kids on bikes going nuts just before bed time! Luckily the rain had stopped so Rob and Hannah were able to put up their Bell Tent in the dry while Arlo had fun in our van – he loves helping Mag to get things out of the fridge and cupboards:) We even put the roof up, a rarity for us! With the sun now out we all went for a lovely walk in the spooky pine woods discovering a kid’s park and had great fun on the zip wire, Arlo loved it. It was then back to the van for a yummy curry. Arlo goes to bed with no problem and after I do my pics on the laptop and the others read, we all have a fairly early night – top day:) Photo Gallery Here Sutton Hoo Rendlesham Forest |
