4th September 2020 Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: W Wind Stength: 8 - 20KTS Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny / cloud Max Speed: 19.6kts (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 18.7 nm (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Another 5 star day for me at my favourite windsurf site Bradfield on the River Stour. On arrival Newbie foiler Keith was fitting a bicycle tube full of air attached to his mast to avoid nose damage! hmmm! He went straight to the top buying Slingshot 160L Levitator board and 76 wing foil, looks very nice. Wind was variable in direction West backing SW / NW as well as strength gusting 20 kts. Neil went 6.9 which was worrying as I rigged my 9.3 North S type 3 cam sail. This is a fantastic sail which will def take a lot of wind and is very stable. Neil was overpowered so stayed with the 9.3 hook to the Exocet RF91 board. Switch the 84cm front wing to the 76 on the Slingshot foil to calm things down in the gusts. Colsey went 9+. Flew straight off the beach and wallop - over the front door in big gusts. This kept happening for 30 mins and couldn't figure out what was wrong as I couldn't keep the nose down when over powered! Then I noticed the North mast base had slipped yet again to the back of the track. I really have to come up with a solution to stop it. Even after landing it took 10 minutes to move the jammed base. After moving base forward, it was business as usual - nice beat to Mistley, flying all the way then down to Wrabness. The wind would swing a lot, and sometimes drop but the 9.3 is a powerful sail, that soon picked up again after the lulls. Didn't go on any long journeys and stayed within sight of everyone. As always practised the different phases of foiling - upwind down etc. Given up on sailing in both straps downwind, as I cant seem to apply enough mast pressure to keep the nose down as the board increased speed, so did the stand upright thing sail not sheeted in to get the long down winders run stable. Gybes attempts didn't go well - always tripping at the flip stage. No probs as flare gybes OK. Another nice day on the Stour, with the 5 other sailors. Although DC said it was too gusty, and his worst sail lately, he was flying all over the place, Sir James def got the hang of it along with Neil. Keith has just started so didn't see him much. Did 19.6kts but cant really get excited at those low numbers compared to fin sailing! Now looking for a 7.8 North S type as they are so good and stable, then I only really need to rig 2 |
