Wednesday 31st October 2001

Despite the absolutely perfect Force 5-6 NW winds and sunshine, I was unable to get out on the sea today as I had stupidly agreed to work in an office for the day!!...Grrr.

Tuesday 30th October 2001

I went to Borth in the morning to go for a windsurf, but there wasn't quite enough wind to make it worthwhile, so I went to work instead. I then managed to get to the beach again around 3.30pm, which didn't really give me enough time to go windsurfing, although the conditions (Southerly winds Force 5-6) would have been perfect. I went for a nice little surf at the Lifeboat Station instead. The waves were a little lumpy, but 3-4 foot on the sets. They dropped off as the tide came in, but I had a few good waves. Martin and Richard came out a little later on, but missed the best of it.

Thursday 25th October 2001

At last, I managed to get back on the water. I've finally caught back up with work, and have a vehicle, so managed to get to Borth at around 10.30 am. The surf by the lifeboat station was good (3 foot and clean), so after waking Steve up who was asleep in his car at the Golf Course Car Park, I went for a surf at the Lifeboat Station. James and his friend Mark who had stayed the night at our house also went in for a surf. The wind then picked up, so we all headed to the Golf Course Car Park. Des and his girlfriend, Richard, Ben and Derek were all already out sailing and all changing down to 4.5m sails. Richy (RIP) and Joe also went out, and Steve and I rigged 4.5m sails. The sailing was OK, but the conditions were a little challenging, with a very strong rip and some pretty big waves. Everybody ended up walking back up wind at some point after falling off in the whitewater.

Friday 19th October 2001

I haven't been out playing at all this week due to work commitments and the stresses and strains of buying a new van and a house. However, everyday has been absolutely perfect for windsurfing, with cross-offshore winds of between Force 5 and Force 7 all the time, and swells of varying heights. The surf has been good on ocassion too. Had this been a normal week I probably would have managed a surf and a windsurf every day.

''Birth of a new Toybox.'

Perfect windsurfing conditions today, but things have been a little hectic to say the least. Not only am I hunting for a new toybox, but we about to put in an offer on our first house (right next to ther sea of course!). I did find a van that I decided to buy though. Bigger and better than the last toybox, and dark blue this time. Now I have to design the interior complete as usual with double bed, stove, heaters, wetsuit drying space and toy cupboards. I won't kit it out for a while though as having an empty van will come in useful for the move. The worst part of all this (other than the sudden heavy financial burden) is that it all takes a lot of time and the forecast for the week looks perfect for windsurfing (Southerly or SE winds Force 5-8)... I won't be getting out though as loads of things need to be sorted and I also need to do loads of work to pay for the new toybox.... I'm sure everyone else will be out, but I don't want to know about it!

'Death of the ToyBox'

Some bad news today. I took my trusty Transit Van Toybox to Bristol for its MOT, and it failed in big style. Most things were OK, but the chassis had completely corroded away due to the exposure to salt water meaning that it was irrepairable. There was nothing I could do, but scrap the van and get a lift back to Aber with all my stuff from my brother Brad.
In the end I managed to sell the van to a guy who will ship it out to Africa...They'll bolt it together with some scaffold poles there and continue to use it! I now have to dig deep and find some money for a new one as the expected £200 or so MOT bill has turned into a £4000 new toybox bill. Grrrr.

Monday 8th October 2001

The best session yet. 4.5m sail and my Hifly with my smallest fin from Hango Hill in Castletown Bay. All on my own with some fairly large swells out in the bay. Nicely powered up and having fun.

Sunday 7th October 2001

We met up with the local windsurfers around midday and then drove and rigged up at the Golf Course in Castletown Bay, at Hango Hill and eventually at Derby Haven as the wind increased and swung around to SE. In the end we all (about 12 people) went sailing at Derby Haven in increasing winds. I first went out with my 6.3m sail, Axxis 278 and a big fin, but soon changed to a smaller fin, then a smaller board, then down to my 5.4m sail and then to a smaller fin again. It was a good session in choppy waters with quite a few other people out. I couldn't be bothered to change down againb, but when I eventually packed up it was easily 4.5m weather. Dave from the shop was there doing forward loops, and attempting Vulcans. Another good day.

Saturday 6th October 2001

Even windier today and being a little tired I decided to sail at Derby Haven at high tide. Perfect flat water blasting and carve gybe practise conditions with my 5.1m Tomahawk sail and my Hifly 265 board. Anna and her mum were sat in the sun watching too. After this Anna and I drove around a bit and found 3 people out sailing in Castletown Bay, but launching from the corner just off the golf course. The winds there were cross-shore and there was no shorebreak, just lots of wind. They were out on wave boards with 3.6-4.0m sails and even then seemed to be overpowered at times.
After this Anna and I drove back around to Hango Hill and watched them sailing by for a time. The tide was high still and the waves dumping nastily on the pebbels here. We then headed across to Port Erin to the watersports shop there and got chatting to the guys there. There was a nicely shaped but very small wave at Port Erin, so we all headed to Gansey to go surfing. Unfortunately there wasn't really any surf to speak of here, but we all went in for a paddle anyway.

Friday 5th October 2001

Windier today, so I got to Castletown Bay earlier and again went sailing from Hango Hill area. The tide was lower this time so I could launch from the sand and there was no real shorebreak. The wind was also more southerly so cross-onshore. I was out on my Hifly 265 with my 5.4m sail. There were some nice swells out the back for jumping off and then a few nice little waves to ride back in. A pretty good session..

Thursday 4th October 2001

Anna and I arrived on the Isle of Man at 6am after travelling all night. After some breakfast an a quick sleep we headed off to the beaches. Castletown Bay looked to be the best place so I rigged up by Hango Hill. I went out to start with on my Hifly with my 6.3m sail, but there wasn't quite enough wind so I changed to my Axxis board with a big fin. There was just enough wind to get planing and I had an OK sail, but the tide was high (springs) so the shorebreak was dumping onto the pebbles making launching and landing in the directly onshore winds a little difficult. This wasn't help by the huge quantities of seaweed along the water edge which coated my boom, got tangled around my legs and fin and generally got in the way.

Tuesday 2nd October 2001

A nice windsurf session in the Estuary at Ynyslas. I got there around 4pm, but there wasn't enough water, but just as I was about to give up and go home Ben turned up, so I went for a sail anyway. It was pretty windy so I rigged my 5.1m Arrows Tomahawk sail with my Hifly, while Ben rigged a 5.0m sail too. We were having a good time and flat water blasting was a welcome change to the waves of the sea front. Ben then crashed into a sandbank and bent his boom so packed up and went home. I stayed out a while longer blasting back and forth and practiseing my carve gybes. Probably one of the last evening sessions of the year.
