Windsurfing: Calshot Wind Direction: NE Wind Stength: 14-22 knots Surf / Sea State: Flat/calshot chop Air Temperature: 26ºC Sea Temperature: 19ºC Weather: What does a cloud look like...? Max Speed: Distance Covered:
NE'lies so reluctantly went to Calshot. Would have gone tomorrow (Weds)
when wind is forecast to swing round to the East, but didn't want to risk
missing the tennis (Henman in US open Q-F) and the footy (Eng-Pol).
Having sold my 6.0 and my 460 on Saturday, was hoping it would be 5.2 windy
or less. Otherwise I would have to buy a brand new 6.0 from Solent
Sailboards.... But yeah looked fine when I arrived - a fair few people out
on small sails.
Front port footstrap came un-plugged again the moment I put my foot in it
when leaving the beach - not a good start. So came straight back in and
fortunately the pin hadn't fallen out into the water. Fixed it no probs and
went back out again.
Was good for the first 20 mins, wind up and down but generally well powered
up. Sailing well also, all good gybes and one sweet duck gybe on my weaker
side starboard-to-port, although being a port tack day it was on the inside
- think the psychological thing of doing moves in shallow water increases
my success rate much more than which tack I do them on. One half-decent
body drag as well, which although it felt like I just flopped in the water,
I did manage to get back on again no problem. Maybe it looked good from the
beach?
A strong current was running with the wind, which made sailing a bit of a
struggle - a constant battle to stay upwind. Was OK at the start when I was
well powered up. But then I came in for a break, and as so often happens
when I went back out again the wind was dropping off, and I was
underpowered. Drifted a long way downwind. Tried changing up fins but that
didn't help. Ended up way way downwind. Would have been a good 10-15 minute
walk of shame, but couldn't be arsed with that. So left my kit where I
landed, walked back up to the car in my wetsuit and drove it back to my kit
to de-rig.
Calshot delivers yet another fairly shitty session. That damn current is a
pain in the bum. But the weather couldn't have been any more perfect, and
the good 20 mins at the start means it scrapes 3 stars.
