Decided to get to the snow for the half term week after an invite from an old snowboard instructor friend of mine who lives in sofia and was out in bansko for the season.
first impressions of the place;- a building site!! apartments everywhere, many finished but many left half finished due to lack of money; that meant lots of buyers out in the cold!!
Bansko up the mountain is fine; i think it is the biggest range in bulgaria but getting up is a pain. only one gondola up the mountain, not unusual for a couple of hour wait to get on!!!!!! and that was with half the flats empty!!! could not see much development by english tourist companies, if they do get around to using the resort would suggest ALL MEALS INCLUDED! unless of course you are partial to pigs trotters, sheeps heads amongst others.
the flight out with swiss air is a story in itself; flight from zurich to sofia cancelled on my arrival there. having arrived to catch a 0845 flight sat morning from birmingham i got into the resort 0430 sunday morning..........tired!!
good snow up the mountain. tues it started snowing and didnt stop till friday evening; had 30/50cm of fresh powder on all runs friday.
would i go again, well staying with someone who knows there way around and can speak a bit of bulgarian ok but it dont compare to france...OH AND ITS NOT THAT CHEAP EITHER .
